1 Kings 10:24 And the whole earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his mind.

James 1:5 If anyone of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God , who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

Job 28:28 And he said to man, “Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.”

Nothing quite like what we would think to be the definition of wisdom on any normal day, right? But that’s just the thing. The world has a way of forcing, though perhaps only imperceptibly, its attitudes and definitions on us. It insists on giving us a particular set of eyes with which to look at and consider everything, and it teaches us to react and respond to things in a particular way which might in reality be very much at odds with what the Bible expects of us.

Does it not feel a little impractical to define wisdom this way? Incomplete? Insufficient? Naive? We almost always expect wisdom to mean wit, shrewdness, a depth and breadth of knowledge, and a well informed and equipped mind as it were. To be certain, wisdom does indeed include all these things, but none of these words capture the entirety and the heart of wisdom. They fall short in one very important regard; they look to much at the man who possesses the gift and forgets the giver of the gift. The Bible defines wisdom, simply, yet profoundly too, as the fear of God. King Solomon was wise so long as he had the fear of God in him, when his heart went astray from following God, and he loved many foreign women, he erred terribly and forfeited the kingdom.

However ingenious it might at first seem, however clever it might sound, nothing is wise that dishonours God and disobeys his commandments. Or that exalts sin and worships man. Anything that is against God’s will, anything contrary to Scripture, anything done for a purpose other than His, no matter how clever or out of the box, is as foolish as foolish gets. No matter how excellently and gloriously such a man might start, he too will die a fool’s death. The Lord will always frustrate the wisdom of the wise, and will make foolish the wisdom of the world.

Prayer:

The very wise and Omniscient God, we thank you because every good and perfect gift is from you, and with you there is no variation or shadow due to change. Thank you for the blessed Holy Scriptures that are able to make us wise unto salvation. By your grace O lord, and by the help of the Holy Spirit, may we always walk in the fear of you, for that is true wisdom indeed. In Jesus Name. Amen.
