1 Samuel 17:58 ‘Whose son are you young man?’ Saul asked him. David said, ‘I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem.’
It couldn’t have been that David was unknown to King Saul. David had been playing the harp to him, and he had asked Jesse to let David stay with him. Just a few moments before David’s face-off with Goliath, King Saul had fitted the armor on David, worried that while Goliath had been a warrior from his youth, David was a mere shepherd boy. But God would work a glorious victory for Israel by this small shepherd boy, and when David was brought to stand before King Saul, with Goliath’s head in his hand, the King asked again, as though he’d never known: ‘whose son are you young man?’
Whose son are you? How do you answer? If we answer properly as we ought, if we apprehend the enormity and preciousness of our heritage, if we look back at the rock from which we are hewn and the hole from which we have been dug, if we take encouragement in John 1:13 that we are children born not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man but of God, if we are assured in our hearts that having the spirit of God we are children of God— then what glory and what peace and what joy is indeed ours! See brethren, see what manner of love God has lavished on us, that we should be called the children of God.
Prayer: Our Father who art in heaven, thank you for accepting us into the beloved. Thank you for the chance to be fellow heirs with your son Jesus Christ. Thank you for your great love toward us. May this ever be a source of comfort and confidence. In Jesus Name. Amen.
